VISUALS FOR TERRY RILEY at TIOH

Terry-Riley-at-Temple-Israel-Hollywood-INFO2.jpg

Sunday, August 11th - 7pm-10pm

This is a performance celebrating the closing of the Dilexi Multi Venue Retrospective and 50th Anniversary of the Dilexi Foundation Film Music with Balls has reached its capacity.

California Composer Terry Riley pioneered the Minimalist movement through interlocking repetitive patterns. Working with fellow pioneers Ramon Sender, Morton Subotnick at their San Francisco Tape Music Center he performed IN C in 1964, a seminal work based on interlocking repetitive patterns which subsequently revolutionized 20th Century music. In 1969 Riley performed a live set from his work A Rainbow in Curved Air for the Dilexi Foundation film Music with Balls with the kinetic sound sculpture of Arlo Acton currently on view at Parrasch Heijnen until August 10. Riley and La Monte Young scored the early performances of Anna Halprin’s Dancer’s Workshop. He also worked with Ken Dewey and The Living Theater which all see their Dilexi Foundation films currently showing at The Landing gallery courtesy of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Foundation.

This event will witness a new direction for Riley as he has written new music for the Dilexi Retrospective’s closing performance. The state of the art sound architecture of TIOH will offer an unprecedented psychoacoustic experience to hear this work which the artist encourages lying down to mark this 50th anniversary.

This Retrospective celebrates The Dilexi Gallery 1958-1969 and its aftermath through its founder Jim Newman who went on to co-found Other Minds and produce a documentary with Pandit Pran Nath La Monte Young and Terry Riley. The Dilexi Multivenue is a coalition between galleries Parrasch Heijnen, Parker Gallery, The Landing, Marc Selwyn Fine Art in Los Angeles and Crown Point Press and Brian Gross Fine Art in San Francisco. Dublab is designing a historic website for the Dilexi history to supplement the curatorial’s publication Dilexi A Gallery and Beyond. Both projects present the little known convergence of experimental music and contemporary art in the 50s and 60s and how their pioneering efforts are pivotal to the West Coast story.

PELLYVISION - DARKMATTER SOUNDSYSTEM TAKEOVER

Recorded Tuesday, July 23, 2019

This month we showcased Darkmatter Soundsystem in anticipation of their 18th Year Anniversary Party on Saturday, July 27th, with E-De-Cologne, Moment Trigger and various members of the Darkmatter Crew. Darkmatter was founded in 2001 by a collective of like minded individuals who sought to fill a void in the Los Angeles underground. They wanted nothing to do with the restrictive, overpriced nature of clubs and commercial raves, and most importantly wanted to showcase music that did not fit anywhere else in the L.A underground. Their collective mission is to showcase extreme electronics and splintered beats in independent autonomous zones. We had three members of the Darkmatter Crew spinning for us: Baseck, Shrill and Diskore.

Drum & Lace, is an Italian composer, sound artist and performer that creates music for film and media. Inspired by interesting sounds and cinematic elements, Drum & Lace melds together sampled field recordings and lush layers of synths to create densely textural and beat-heavy music, greatly drawing from film music, music concrete and modern electronica.
