Artist BIO
Alex Pelly is a video and sound artist who has been active in the Los Angeles art and music community for over a decade. Utilizing multiple generations of video technology, both analog and digital, Pelly creates multi-sensory experiences centered on visceral colors, shapes and sounds in motion. Her work interrupts the barrage of prescribed meaning that has exponentially pervaded our consciousness to create meditative experiences based on individual perception.
Originally from Canada, Pelly moved to Los Angeles in 2004 to attend the University of Southern California, where she majored in Cinematic Arts and Creative Writing with an emphasis in poetry. She found her beginnings in experimental video by providing visuals for musical happenings curated by dublab, a community-supported internet radio station and creative collective. Since 2016, she has maintained a monthly audio-visual radio show on dublab called “PELLYVISION”, which was supported by grants from mediaThe Foundation in both 2023 and 2024. Pelly is deeply rooted in Los Angeles’ underground electronic music scene and was resident visualist for music series Perpetual Dawn from 2015-2019. From 2020-2023 she created tour visuals for legendary drag queen singer/songwriter Trixie Mattel.
Pelly began creating her own sounds in 2020. Using audio and video synthesizers, she has since begun performing and recording compositions and improvisation, combining sonic and optic mediums. In addition to numerous solo appearances under her own name, she has also performed and recorded as OX, a duo with Oren Kolin. OX released “Jupiter”, an audio-visual EP, on Simballrec in 2022.
Pelly has shown work at LACMA, MoMA PS1, The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles, Gagosian Gallery Beverly Hills, Coaxial Arts Foundation, Los Angeles Central Library, Digital Debris Gallery, LA Weekly's Artopia, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and the Budokan Arena in Tokyo. Among countless other artists, she has performed with Terry Riley, Suzanne Ciani, William Basinski, Kid606, Byron Westbrook, Carlos Giffoni, Phife Dawg (Tribe Called Quest), Madlib, Egyptian Lover, Daedelus, Telecaves, and ESP.
